Temptation.

...

As this day begins, it seems I found on mine chest something other than my many sins.

A fragment. A memory of the finest adventure I’ve had on God’s Green Planet.

All the beautiful scenes, beheld only by the eyes that had for once dared to seek.

A fragrance. A veil hung on life’s many stages concealing both the pure and the flagrant.

Alive. I felt alive when I took it out of the thicket and gazed into its crimson sides.

Allured by its luster and texture, I hid it in mine sinister shirt pocket and away I ventured.

I arrived. And as I took it out it seemed rather brittle and the cracks, though little, were clear signs.

I placed it on mine table right at the center, but quickly removed it when someone else entered.

As the tides of time rose and fell, this little secret of mine began to show and tell.

A dead feline. The consequence of digging below the surface, a slow and steady decline.

A scar from the previous storms of hail, and how it used to be a currency, to buy what’s on sale.

Read between the lines. Rid not of its purity but of what gave it immunity from a man’s eyes.

Mine. A jewel polished by the sands of time, its origin can neither be whispered nor even mimed.

But it can be sung, to both your wives and daughters or your husbands and sons.

A mine. A secret open to all, like the effects of wine on a mind that does nothing but fantasize.

And it can’t be won, because as soon as you’ve found it...it’s gone. Onwards to its next home.
